With the rising importance of Black Pound Day, we decided to champion some of the best black-owned businesses in Manchester that continue to support and grow the black economy community.
Below we have listed some of the best black businesses to support. Each offers unique products and services but all are connected through purpose.
Top Black Businesses
- AppFrolution: a mobile application to keep track of and document the growth of afro hair. The app is basically a really cool and simple hair diary. The app allows you to track hair length, keep track of the products used, your hair goals, create a haircare schedule and more.
- DonDaDa: sells unique and simple jewellery and other accessories promoting African culture. 11% of the profit is used towards grants that they provide to the public known as opportunity grants. Entrepreneurial, Financial and University grant.
- Jobseekrs: Jobseekrs is a video interactive job site based in Manchester created by entrepreneur Jamaal Brathwaite. Their aim is to give everyone a fair chance at finding a job regardless of their race, name, ethnicity or gender by mitigating unconscious bias in the recruitment process. Using a Tinder-like matchmaking system, their app works by asking the user 11 questions that will align them with an employer that shares the same cultural identity as them. The company’s aim is to increase diversity and inclusion in the workplace.
- Bukkybaldwin: Bukky Baldwin is flipping the script on the ethics of the fashion and textile industry. The label focuses on the importance of community and providing employment opportunities for marginalised groups. The brand values individuals in need at its core and we are committed to using creativity as a tool to bring about positive socioeconomic change in the UK. Everything is hand-made and is made using 100% recycled polyester and produced locally in Manchester
